Bike Safety Metro Ads February 6, 2008

Living here in Santa Cruz I was struck by how ideal the weather is to bicycle commuting but how dangerous the streets were. I commuted by bicycle myself for years until I was almost ran over twice in one day by heavy commuter traffic. The bicycle safety course I attended advised me to “take the lane” but I confess that many times I was too scared to get in the cell phone talking driver’s way.

Of course, the problem of bicycle safety is a two way street and so I decided to try and open the eyes of some individuals who were inadvertently contributing to making bicycling so dangerous. Rather than run ads which spoke of dental issues I am trying to remind people not to park in the bike lanes, turn on their lights, and not ride on the wrong side of the road or sidewalk.
